The weather has been changing enough with the season that some of our animal habitants are heading for warmer climates. Migration patterns are curious things, passed on from generation to generation. While our own society has some cultural events that are somewhat similar, our species seems to lack something so instinctual. Which may not be a detriment to us, given that we have no need to migrate thanks to our unique ability to adapt to environments. But that does not mean that we cannot watch and observe with a measure of wonder at the phenomena.

There is an extra credit opportunity for any Care of Magical Creatures students of 6th and 7th years. I would like to request the help of one or two students who would like to help me prepare a habitat for some specimens that I shall be receiving. Extra credit will be awarded based on learning to work with creating safe habitats for magical creatures based on the animal’s specific needs. Should anyone be interested I would request you stop by my office.

Halloween is coming up. Of course it is not exactly upon us, but it is certainly a holiday of interest, historically speaking. I cannot say that I have celebrated it very often in the past, but this year it seems very poignant, given the circumstances that some how have already crossed over find themselves in now. Though it does seem that we have to hide behind masks to disguise ourselves from them. Given the belief in the original tradition that Halloween was a night that brought us closer to the veil, perhaps there will be another surge of those returning.

Given that I have not seen any of your faces yet in the papers, nor here at school, I would hope that you all find yourselves at the very least in some measure of safety. And while it might not seem important now, I do hope you are keeping up with at least some sort of study. Though, given circumstances, my own subject is perhaps not the most important.

I do hope that everyone is settling into the routine of being back at school. I'm finding fewer and fewer lost first years as each day goes by. Even though it was farther back than I should really admit, I still have very clear memories of those first few weeks here.

I would like to remind students that yes, the Forest is off limits. While I'm sure you're tired of hearing that, it is for your own safety and for the safety of the beings that live there. You will not find me having any qualms about giving detention if I catch you straying too close and I assure you that cleaning up animal dung is not a pleasant detention.

Outside of that little announcement, I do hope that everyone is settling into their classes well enough, Professors and Students.

Iman owled me, which was a pleasant surprise. Of course she has been hearing about what is going on back here in England and I can't help but hope she stays where she is. She has a Gryffindor mind, even if she never came here, and I'd hate for her to get tangled up in this mess.

Still, it seems she's doing well, which is all I could hope for. But she's worried about me, that's easy enough to tell.

It's the first day of school. I do hope that everyone is prepared, or at least as prepared as possible. With all these last minute staff changes it must feel like first year all over again to many of the students. So many new faces at the faculty table. And new faces at each of the student ones as well. Hopefully this will be an educational year for everyone. At least we'll all become acquainted with last minute book additions, I suppose.

Sometimes I wonder if the Death Eaters want to 'purify' or simply just wipe out everyone. Must thank Filius for helping me strengthen the charms and wards around the animals. At least I'm in charge of the animals instead of any of them. Not sure if I'll be very effective in keeping them out of the forest. Sure most of the animals there are perfectly capable, more than capable, of defending themselves, but there's always that risk.

Perhaps I'll discuss it with Pomona over tea, but then again I'm not sure how safe such discussions would be.

Well I have to say it is rather nice to have an actual office here at the castle instead of the temporary offices they had housed me in previously. I always say that it's good to have a base camp, somewhere you can go to recoup and plan out the next day or whatever it is that you need to tackle at the moment. And I'm almost certain that the stair cases last time took a bit of glee in keeping students from my broom closet of an office before.

But now that my office is for the most part unpacked, I'm looking forward to the new school year. We have a new book in order, so I hope that students who were in previous years don't mind purchasing a new one. If it is an issue, or you were not able to get a copy of one, just give me a heads up first day of class and we can see if I can get a special order in.

Also, just for fun, anyone who happens to be in my class who wants to request perhaps a lesson on something specific, be it a specific animal or some aspect of magizoology, don't hesitate to ask. If I like your ideas well enough, who knows, perhaps I'll adjust my lesson plan a bit.

Oh, and just to clear this up, I'm Professor Grubbly-Plank. I'll be taking over Care of Magical Creatures again for the foreseeable future.

I do wonder what Hagrid was thinking with those books. Then again I do suppose he did not mean any harm, but while they're helpful in understanding behavioral patterns, the content is just not what I was hoping for. Though it would be fascinating to see if they were capable of bonding like an animal. Ah well.

Though I do wonder what to do about this muggleborn situation. It's completely idiotic, all research including my own finds this to be a belief that is entirely unsupported by evidence. Perhaps I should discuss it with Pomona or Minerva, if it is at all possible with the school's current climate.
